Monthly Wine Club at Swing Restaurant

The first Monday of every month join me at Swing to learn about the wonderful world of wine.  We will explore one variety each month, and this club will educate people on how to taste wines, talk about them with some fun wine terms (great for impressing your friends), the winemaking process, food and wine pairing and a fun night for people with no wine knowledge as well as those who are wine savvy.   You can expect to taste a variety of different wine styles each month from all over the world and will help you gain an appreciation for all types of wines.   This casual setting will make you feel comfortable, and the discussion format will encourage you to ask questions and give your feedback on each wine.  Following the tasting we will sample some foods that go well with each style of wine.  Bring a group of friends and enjoy some great times!

Explore the versatility of this grape variety, and understand why it is quickly
becoming one of the most respected of wines.  We will explore the wonderful world of
Niagara Rieslings as well as those from around the world.  We will be tasting all styles of Riesling, from dry to sweet in our first wine adventure.

May 5th, 2008 – Youthful Beaujolais
Beaujolais is a wine region just outside of Burgundy, and Gamay is the grape native to this area.  We will explore this unique variety from some wonderful French versions, to those from Niagara.  Learn about this very lively and fresh variety, and why France holds a whole festival around Gamay (Beaujolais Nouveau).

June 2nd, 2008 – Summer Roses
Roses are a perfect summer wine, and as we start into the summer season learn to appreciate the many styles of Rose from dry to sweet.  From very fresh flavours of strawberry to more earthy styles (for the red wine lovers) there is a Rose for all palates.

July 7th, 2008 – Sexy Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc, or White Bordeaux is a very resistant variety that is grown all over the world.  From New Zealand to California, this grape can produce very different wines with exciting and unique flavours.  This is one of my favourites to have on the golf course during the day!

August 4th, 2008 – Pinot Noir and the Power of Burgundy
Thanks to the movie Sideways, Pinot Noir has become a juggernaut taking the world by storm.  Pinot Noir is a very fussy grape variety that produces very different wines from year to year.  We will take a tour of Burgundy and around the world to see how very different these wines can be.

September 8th, 2008 – Classic Chardonnay
Chardonnay has dominated the white wine world for over 100 years.   Learn about barrel-aging and how different types of oak are reflected in the flavours of Chardonnay.   This white is an excellent food wine, and we will be tasting the many styles from around the world and discussing how foods can affect this wines flavours .

October 6th, 2008 – King of Grapes, Cabernet & Bordeaux Blends
Long considered to be the King of Grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon (paired with Cabernet Franc and Merlot for Bordeaux blends) is a very sophisticated variety that produces very full-bodied reds.  We will take our time looking at the many flavour profiles of Bordeaux reds and begin to understand the complexity of these wines.

November 3rd, 2008 – Champagne and Sparkling White Wines
Brush up on your Champagne and Sparkling White knowledge before the holiday season and impress your family and friends with some bubbly wine knowledge.  Learn about the many different ways to make sparkling whites and how each has a dramatic impact on the wines.

December 1st, 2008 – Misunderstood Zinfandels
Although the world of “white zinfandel” unfortunately comes to mind as soon as you mention Zinfandel, this red variety is native to Italy and California.  It produces red wines with the full-bodied characters of Bordeaux reds.  Zinfandel is one of my favourite varieties (as two of the most common flavours are coffee and chocolate), help change the perception of this wonderful wine and taste some exciting Zinfandels from both California and Italy.

March 30, 2009 California Wines
we will be tasting wines from California (both red and white).  The price will be $50 (inclusive) per person for wines and small tastings of food (not a full dinner).  The wine tasting will be from 6:30 – 9 pm (ish).  This will include a guided tour through California and a minimum of 12 wines will be tasted.
